A few years ago, I noticed an interesting but little-discussed trend related to persistent declines in the rates of fertility across many countries. A massive reduction in fertility always occurs after the median age for women having their first child crosses 27. This holds true whether you are talking about Germany, Sweden, Italy, Greece or Japan and South Korea. Some years ago, on a previous blog, I also wrote about how changes in the ‘life-cycle’ of people in western countries caused by the widespread adoption of neoliberal ideology, such as unnecessarily long university education and very unstable jobs/careers, had created conditions for the slow motion implosion of those societies.
